Good gracious! - मनातील भावना व्यक्त करण्यासाठी चांगला दयाळू आहेस म्हणणे.

how you hop ? - तू कसा टुणटुण उड्या मारतोस?

over- अंतर ठेवून वर 

on - लगत वर

fields- farm (क्षेत्र, शेती)

over the fields -शेती वरून 

too - देखील, सुद्धा

to - कडे, ला 

two - दोन 

never - कधीही नाही

you never would stop - तू कधीही थांबणार नाहीस.

life-  जीवन

my life - माझे जीवन 

bore - निरस, कंटाळवाणे,निरुत्साह

my life is a bore - माझे जीवन निरस आहे

pond - डबके, तलाव

nasty pond - घाणेरडे डबके

in this nasty pond - या घाणेरड्या डबक्यात

world -जग

beyond - पलीकडे दूर 

world beyond -जगाच्या पलीकडे दूर 

wish - इच्छा  करणे, अभिलाषा, कामना

I wish - मी इच्छा करतो.

I hop- मी टुणटुण उड्या मारतो

I could hop - मी उड्या मारू शकतो.

like you- तुझ्या सारखे 

I could hop like you-मी तुझ्या सारखे उड्या मारू शकतो.

requires - निकड ,गरज 

reflection - एखाद्या घटनेवर विचार करणे

little reflection -थोडा विचार 

some little reflection - अगदी थोडा विचार

requires some little reflection- अगदी थोडा विचार करणे गरजेचे आहे.

perhaps - कदाचित

on the whole - संपूर्णवर, सगळ्यावर

it might bring me luck - हे माझे सुदैव घेऊन येऊ शकते.

seems - दिसते

and there seems - आणि तिथे दिसते.

objection - आक्षेप 

but one objection - पण एक आक्षेप आहे.

speak - बोला

And would probably give me the

rheumatism - संधिवात

roo -matiz - संधिवात

on the rocks - खडकांवर

socks- पायमोजे

fit - योग्य मापात असणे

my web-feet - माझे जाळीदार पाय

neatly - सुबक,व्यवस्थित

Which fit my web-feet neatly

I’m ready - मी तयार आहे.

moon- चंद्र

light- प्रकाश 

moonlight - चंद्रप्रकाश,चांदणे

pale- निस्तेज,अंधुक

moonlight pale - अंधुक,चंद्रप्रकाश

All in the moonlight pale. 

balance - तोल सांभाळणे

balance me well - मला चांगले तोलून ने

But to balance me well

sit - बसा

steady - स्थिर, अविचल, 

sit steady - न हलता बसा

dear Duck, sit steady ! -  

quite -अगदी 

at the end - शेवटाला, टोकाला

of my tail - माझ्या शेपटीच्या 

And quite at the end of my tail!

they went - ते गेले 

with a hop - टुणटुण उड्या मारत

bound - बद्ध, कटिबद्ध, बंधनकारक, बांधलेला

So away they went with a hop and a bound.

And they hopped 

the whole world - संपूर्ण जग

three times round  - तीनवेळा वर्तुळाकार

so happy - खूप आनंदी 

agree- सहमत

agreed- सहमती दिली

took place - घडल्या, घडले

travell- प्रवास 

travelled-प्रवास केला 

make-believe - ढोंग करणे, नाटकी पणाने.

highlight -लिखित मजकुराच्या काही भागाकडे लोकांचे लक्ष जावे म्हणून वेगळ्या रंगात खूण करणे.

(कोणत्याही गोष्टीचा अत्यंत चित्तवेधक किंवा महत्त्वाचा भाग)

reflection : thinking

objection : reason for not doing something

roo- matiz : rheumatism

roo- matiz : The poet’s funny way of saying

rheumatism which is a disease.

worsted : special woollen fabric

bound (noun) : big jump

Good gracious : an exclamation, words

used to show surprise or other strong feelings

bore (noun) : something that is dull, not

interesting

long (verb) : wish for something, want

something very much


POINTERS

1. Form groups of three. Play the roles of the narrator,  the Duck and the Kangaroo and read the poem aloud with proper pauses and intonation.

2. Read aloud the following words. Note the difference in the long and the short

vowel sounds.

Find other pairs of words with long and short vowel sounds.

4. Use other words in place of the highlighted words to make meaningful sentences.

5. Tourists and Citizens :

Prepare the following placards. Let different children stand in different places

to create a make-believe town in the classroom. Other children play the roles of

(a) citizens and (b) tourists.

The tourists enquire about the route to different places in the town and the

citizens guide them.

They may also exchange more information about the places.

 ADVERBS

Read aloud the following sentences :

 ◆ I have thought over that completely.

 ◆The socks fit my feet neatly.

 ◆ Balance me well.

 ◆ Sit steady.

 ◆ So they went away.

The underlined words are known as adverbs.

An adverb is a word that tells us something more about a verb,

 for example, ◆ Sprinkle them gently. ◆Stir it nicely.

An adverb may give us more information about :

an adjective : ‘You are too kind’.

another adverb : ‘They ran very fast.’

Many adverbs end with ‘-ly’.
